Improve Signal Strenth
Improve your signal strength and quality with a few simple steps:
Make sure your wireless card or adapter is not obstructed
- Wireless cards and adapters should be positioned in an open air environment and not be positioned under a desk, in a desk cabinet, under a shelf, or directly on or in close proximity to metallic objects.
- Depending on the access point location, simply moving the wireless adapter from the back of the PC to the front can be the difference between poor reception and good reception.
Experiment with Your Antenna
- If your adapter has an external antenna, try it in both the vertical position and horizontal position.
- Make sure the antenna isn’t obstructed.
- If possible, purchase a higher gain external antenna for your wireless adapter.
Connect to another access point in your area
- Windows XP’s wireless zero configuration may not accurately report signals from access points.
- Install the manufacturer’s recommended wireless application.
- A 3rd-party tool such as Netstumbler may also be used to verify signal strengths
